Whether you're relocating from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto or another community in British Columbia, moving to a new city is excitingābut it also comes with plenty of questions.
As someone who made the move to the Okanagan myself and now helps buyers relocate here, I know how overwhelming it can feel. My goal is to give you an honest, practical overview of what it's really like to live in Kelowna and the Central Okanagan.
Whether you're seriously planning your move or simply exploring the idea, I hope this guide gives you a clearer picture of what it's really like to call the Central Okanagan home. As the Living Okanagan Resource Centre continues to grow, you'll also find more in-depth guides to help you every step of the way.

Is Kelowna Right for You?
Kelowna offers a lifestyle that's difficult to find in many Canadian cities. Days often revolve around the outdoors, whether that's time at the lake, hiking local trails, golfing, skiing or simply enjoying one of the many parks and wineries.
For families, there's a wide range of neighbourhoods, schools and recreation. Retirees appreciate the active lifestyle and beautiful surroundings, while many professionals and remote workers enjoy the balance between city amenities and nature.
Like anywhere, Kelowna isn't perfect. Housing costs are higher than many Interior BC communities, traffic has increased as the city has grown, and wildfire smoke can occasionally affect summer air quality. Healthcare is another consideration, so it's worth planning ahead if you're relocating.
Kelowna may be a great fit if you:
- Enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle throughout the year.
- Want easy access to lakes, beaches, hiking, skiing, golf and wineries.
- Are looking for a family-friendly community with plenty of recreation.
- Appreciate having nature, amenities and urban conveniences close together.
- Work remotely or have flexibility in where you live.
- Prefer a growing city that still has a strong community feel.
Kelowna may not be your ideal fit if you:
- Prefer the pace, nightlife and public transit of a much larger city.
- Are looking for the lowest possible housing costs.
- Don't enjoy hot, sunny summers or occasional winter driving conditions.
- Want to avoid seasonal tourism and busier roads during the summer months.
- Prefer a quieter rural lifestyle far from a growing urban centre.
A Personal Note
When I moved to the Okanagan from the Lower Mainland, I quickly realized that living here is completely different from spending a long weekend here. Every neighbourhood has its own personality, and what works perfectly for one family may not be the right fit for another.
That's why I created the Living Okanagan Resource Centreāto share honest information and local insight so you can make confident decisions about your move.
Understanding the Central Okanagan
When people say they're moving to Kelowna, they often end up considering more than just the City of Kelowna. For most buyers, the search naturally includes Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country.
Kelowna
The largest city in the region, offering the widest variety of neighbourhoods, shopping, restaurants, healthcare, education and employment.
West Kelowna
A separate city across the bridge known for beautiful lake views, wineries, established and newer neighbourhoods, and a more suburban feel. If you're wondering which side of the lake might suit you best, explore my Kelowna vs. West Kelowna comparison.
Lake Country
A quieter community north of Kelowna offering orchards, vineyards, multiple lakes and a relaxed lifestyle while remaining close to city amenities.
Which Community Is Right for You?
The best community isn't necessarily the one that's most popularāit's the one that best fits your lifestyle. Some people value walkability and downtown amenities, while others prioritize larger lots, lake views or a quieter pace of life. One of my favourite parts of helping clients relocate is showing them communities they may not have originally considered.

šæ Meghan's Local Insight
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is choosing a community before they've thought about the lifestyle they want.
Instead of asking, "Where should I live?", try asking yourself:
- Do I want to walk to restaurants, cafƩs and the waterfront?
- Is being close to schools or work important?
- Would I rather have a larger yard or a shorter commute?
- How important are lake views or outdoor recreation?
- Do I want a quieter neighbourhood or a more vibrant community?
Once you know how you want to live, choosing the right neighbourhood becomes much easier.
